In this work, I digitalised one of my black-white analogue photographs. Changing the labels of light in Photoshop, I created two screen-printing matrixes from the same picture. I used gold color for the first one, and Indigo blue for the second. I influenced from the Byzantine art of Icons which uses the gold as background. Indigo blue, came as an idea when I made a research on the techniques of ancient Greek painting. After Pliny the elder, indigo was one of the four colors which ancient painters used.
The discreet presence of a man, sitting in a strange place, gives visually a melancholic sense. He is in between of himself, in between of a place, in between of time. He possibly reconsiders or makes an introspection to himself, to his personal frame, his existence or past times. A verse from a C.P. Cavafy’s poem came to my mind, when I saw the picture. Its title is “I went” and presents the memories of a man who experienced a life full of passions and pleasures.

Three small etchings (aquatint & drypoint) & hand script poem.

The inspiration of the first etching comes from a votive Icon of 1619 from a monastery in Amorgos island, and shows a ship in danger in a storm. The second is a map from Constantinople and comes from a manuscript of 15th century from Gennadios library (American School of Classical Studies). The third is inspired from the displays in the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki, representing pitchers that were used as storage of the commerce.
The poem above them is a trial to make a resemblance of the work with the manuscripts of that era.
It was presented in an exhibition under the name “Ode to the sea” with main theme the marine transaction and commercial journeys in Black Sea during the Medieval Ages. The exhibition was a project of the Archeological Museum of Piraeus (Greece).
The main purpose of the handwritten poem is to establish a connection between a Byzantine manuscript and a contemporary language, which is written nowadays. Taking the occasion of the journey, the transactions and the cultural interactions (which was the theme of the exhibition within the work participated), the text is trying to be transformed in a personal journey inside the Time and History. Using a poetry view reflects speculations and raises issues about the journey of human Existence during the centuries, regarding History not just as a fact, but as a preferentiality element of Philosophy and Theology.
